Basic History
Luca may be the only son of Carmine Valerio-Dahl but he hasn’t let that fact go to his head. In fact, he often has to side with his older half-brothers Lucius and Kayden against their sisters. At four to three odds, they often have to team up against the girls. Growing up, Luca had an ideal life.
He was quite young when his figured out that his parents didn’t have a normal relationship by the standards of mortals. When he asked about it, he was told that his parents had a very special bond. His father, Carmine, was the chosen of Mars to wield Talos
the God Sword. As a result, he was in a Triad with Rune and Zhara in order to support him against the burdens of such a sword.
Luca accepted this fact and went about his life, ignoring any comment against his parents. Most mortals wouldn’t understand such things. When he was fifteen, Luca joined up with the Junior Guard of his grandfather’s forces. The Junior Guard was a training ground for young Alati to learn what they could do and to hone those talents. Luca quickly excelled within the Junior Guard; not only because he was the son of Carmine but because he’d been training all his life with his family.
By the time he was twenty, Luca had become a full-fledged member of his grandfather’s army and had an officers rank settled on him. He also had made his vows to Mars and had settled into the office of recruiter. As a result of those vows, Luca had been assigned to the Junior Guard, this time as a trainer and mentor. It was during the first survival expedition that he’d planned that it happened.
He’d planned everything carefully, selected the site with care, and led the thirty fifteen year olds assigned to him in the wild with a few other trainers. The first night had gone smoothly but on the second night a group of Godless, Lordless Alati had wandered into the area and attacked the Junior Guard.
As they had no deities or lords, these wild Alati had no real reason for attacking the boys under Luca’s guard other than the fact that they could. Luca did his best to defend the boys but he was taken out by a crossbow bolt to his left knee. Then the real torture began.
This group of Alati rounded up the thirty boys and their trainers and made them walk to an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere. Even Luca, with the bolt still in his knee was made to walk. Once at the house, this group of men had their fun with the boys and trainers in all sorts of ways. Not even Luca was saved from their tortures.
The torture continued for three days with the men dragging each person into another room and keeping them there for hours. When the Junior Guard didn’t return to the estate, Darius, Luca’s grandfather, had sent out searchers with Luca’s Aunt Mirage leading the hunt. After the rescue, Luca spent days being healed, as did the ones who’d survived.
That was only the start though. Consumed by post-traumatic stress disorder, Luca was unable to return to duty. He even seemed unable to spar with his own family without memories of what happened surging to forefront. It got so bad that at one point, he attacked his sister when she’d been innocently going through some Tai Chi moves in the courtyard of his Grandfather’s castle. He’d been on the verge of killing her when his mother’s dragon sat on him. Syryn plopping her weight on him not only knocked the wind out of him but knocked him out.
It seemed that the only solution was to send Luca away until he could get a hold of himself. He opted to travel to the farm his Aunt Mirage ran with her husband in Ireland. He doubted that there would be any confrontations with the horses raised there.
Unknown to Luca, his experiences in that abandoned house were all too similar to experiences in a previous life. The act of having to watch those he was responsible for be tortured and even killed brought buried memories of him, as Lancelot du Lac, watching as his lover and liege-lord, Arthur of Camelot, die in battle at the hands of Mordred. His inability save his students, just like his inability to save Arthur, wreaked havoc on him.
Now, even as he tries to heal his mind in the peaceful Irish countryside, Luca still doesn’t known about his past life as Lancelot. His dreams are haunted by Lancelot’s past memories and the horrors suffered at the hands of nameless men.
