Character name: Kivan
Powers: light/shadow elemental, shape shifter, minor mind control, telepathy
Allegiance: neutral
Age: looks 27 (closer to 300)
Gender: male
Sexuality: hetero
Appearance: Kivan, when in his human form, is right at 6’2 and broad through the shoulders; his arms, chest and legs all quite powerful. Not your typical pretty boy type, he’s more huskily built but there is no fat on him, his shape shifting metabolism is too high for that. His dark brown hair is curly and kept short and spike-able most of the time. Golden brown eyes, very much like those of the animal he was born as, are his one constant feature no matter his form. He is found wearing almost exclusively jeans, t-shirts, and if needed, pull-over hooded sweatshirts.
Personality: The phrase, “strong silent type” describes Kivan to a T. This does not mean he won‘t talk, nor that he is an indiscriminant bully. Just that he only talks to those people he considers worth the effort, and his bullying is mostly reserved for those he feels are a threat. For those he is close to, Kivan will occasionally let his guard down to reveal a rarely seen playful attitude. This mostly happens around his friends’ children (they all see him as a big cuddly teddy bear).
History: Kivan was born a Kodiak brown bear roughly around the year 1700. Unlike most bears, Kivan was unusually comfortable around humans. As soon as he separated from his mother at three years old, he started frequenting Alutiiq(Kodiak Island, Alaska natives) villages. At first the hunters of the villages would chase him away but after a time, when they realized he wouldn’t harm anybody, they learned to trust him.
By the time that he had reached maturity and full growth at 12 years old, Kivan had been adopted, and named, by a shaman of one of the villages he had been visiting for years. Over the years that followed, the Kodiak bear rarely left the village (only in mating season), and his bond with the shaman grew stronger and stranger. The shaman had somehow come to be able to communicate with the bear, they could share feelings only at first. As time progressed, Kivan’s mind became honed enough to actually speak to the shaman.
With each passing year, Kivan’s mental powers were honed by the shaman to the point where not only was the bear able to speak with the shaman telepathically but also with other members of the village. At first the village members were unnerved by Kivan’s abilities but the shaman explained that he was not an ordinary bear, not by any means.
The time finally came when the shaman, quite the old man, grew ill. Kivan was restless, he didn’t know what to do. He’d be lost without his friend and ‘father’. The bear paced the village, snappish and more aggressive than any of the villagers had ever seen him. The moment the shaman’s spirit left his body, Kivan knew. Running through the village with no regard for anything, or anybody, in his path, Kivan made it to the shaman’s side just as the last breath left his body. With a loud roar of rage turned scream, Kivan pulled his ‘father’ into his arms and cried. He was human.
Kivan the man was feral for weeks after the shaman’s death but the villagers were patient, he was after all one of them. When he finally came to his senses, Kivan realized he was no longer a bear and that he had no idea how he had become human. For nearly a year, Kivan tried to figure out how he had brought about the change in his body and it wasn’t until mating season came again, and the change from human to bear occurred quite against his will, that Kivan gained any insight.
For quite a few years Kivan spend his life switching from bear during mating season to human the rest of the year. Only when he returned one year from his excursions as a bear, did Kivan realize that most of the people who knew his true identity were long dead and he had not aged. Hearing the whispers of the suspicious villagers, Kivan left Kodiak Island and never returned.
Stuck in the body of a 27 year old human (as that was how old he was when he first changed) Kivan has had no trouble slipping in and out of society at his whim. Many times he has been drawn to people with powers similar to those of the shaman that first befriended him as a bear. Many were simply friends but occasionally he would find himself a teacher.
Over the years, his teachers have brought out more talents that had lain dormant in his mind including manipulation of light and shadows for illusions, and minor mind control. The mind control is not strong enough to change somebody’s viewpoint on something completely but so long as there is a seed of what he wishes the person to think or believe, Kivan can give them a gentle nudge in the right direction. Along with his new talents, Kivan has expanded upon his shape shifting talent as well. In nearly 300 years of life as a shape shifter, Kivan has been able to observe many other species of animal and can now shift into the majority of animals known to him.
Currently, Kivan is employed as a bouncer at a local night-club. He may not be overly social but his build and temperament suit his job. The club is one frequented by many Dark Ones and humans alike. The humans are for the most part completely ignorant of anything out of the ordinary surrounding them, including Kivan. Many Dark Ones however sense that Kivan is one of them but they’re never really sure just how. Not unless they ask directly will Kivan ever explain his origins. Many Dark Ones just laugh in his face, unbelieving. It is the few who do take him seriously that Kivan will eventually befriend.
