Character name: Isabella (Bella)
Powers: Communication with animals (primarily images, emotions, and memories), minor empathic healing, control of electricity, both naturally occurring and man made.
Allegiance: Good
Age: 22
Gender: female
Sexuality: hetero
Appearance: Bella’s athletically trim 5’6 frame is topped off by a face often called cute or pixie like, if you can see past the eyebrow ring, little diamond stud in one nostril, various ear piercings, and dark emerald green hair that is. Her emerald colored curls fall down to the small of her back when she wears her hair loose or in a braid, which is almost all the time. The inspiration for her chosen hair color (naturally pure white) are her big, gentle, emerald green eyes. Limited by the shade and color of her hair as to just what colors she is able to wear (pink does NOT go with green), Bella can normally be found wearing clothes in various neutral and earth tones. The one constant in her wardrobe is a dark reddish brown leather jacket that reaches nearly to her knees.
Personality: Many people get mixed signals about Bella due to conflicting aspects of her appearance. Some people see her sweet smile, gentle eyes and respectable clothes and just think her the sweetest girl who is expressing her independence (maybe a little too boldly) with her hair color and piercings. Other people get hung up on the piercings and hair color and just assume she’s a rebel child with a bad attitude. Truth be told, she’s a mixed bag. Unless provoked, Bella is a sweet natured, laid back woman who can handle just about anything that comes her way. When provoked however, either by anger, fear or her innate protectiveness of others, sparks will fly. Literally. Having electricity as her element in combination with a somewhat volatile personality can create some very interesting situations at times.
History: Isabella was born to two parents without a whiff of magical talent between them. Almost from the day she was born she made her parents’ lives extremely difficult. Neighborhood cats were constantly trying to get in the house to lay with Bella or play with her, light bulbs had an uncanny habit of sparking and breaking if Bella was extremely happy or upset, and most frustrating to her parents was the almost every time the would go to touch their infant daughter they would get a quick shock as if they had grabbed an electric fence and then let go. The only times they could touch her without getting shocked was if she was sleeping.
Finally the day came that her parents were at a loss of what to do. Knowing her sister had some magical talent, Isabella’s mother had called her begging for help. In the end it was decided it would be best for all involved if Bella were to be raised by her aunt. Within a matter of days all the correct papers had been filed, all the arrangements had been made, and for all intents and purposes Isabella was now her aunt’s daughter.
Her adoption by her aunt when Isabella was just under two months old freed her biological parents of any obligation they had to each other. Rather than risk having another child together that they couldn’t handle they split. Neither have been seen or heard from by their families since the day Bella was transferred into her aunt’s care and custody.
Growing up, Bella didn’t know she was adopted as Julie (her aunt-turned-mother) feared that if Bella knew, the girl’s somewhat tentative control over her magic would shatter. When she was sixteen, Julie told Bella everything. Having looked to Julie all her life as both mother and mentor, she had nothing but respect for what the older woman had done. For her birth parents however, Bella held nothing but contempt.
She finished high school at 18 but instead of heading off to college right away, she went in search of her birth parents. She wanted more than anything to rub it in their faces just how well Julie had raised her, how well she had turned out no thanks to them. Her search ended two years later at her mother’s grave. The woman who had given birth to Bella had been a victim of a drunk driver only months after giving Bella up, of her father there was no sign and only a very cold trail that seemed to go nowhere.
At 20 Bella decided to finally go to college and while Julie could have funded her to go to any school she wanted (thanks to old family funds and scrupulous saving), Isabella chose to attend a liberal arts state college in the Pacific Northwest, all the way across the country from her New England home with Julie. She is currently attending her third year and is majoring in photography. She lives off campus in apartments run by the college, and rooms with another woman in her year. Though Julie offered to help Bella pay for her own apartment, she likes college life and doesn’t want to miss out on any of it even if that means arguing with her room mate about who’s turn it is to do the dishes. She does however escape back to Maine on most holidays, she misses Julie and her own small horde of animals (five cats, two Great Danes and a goldfish) terribly.
At this point in Bella’s life, things are running rather smoothly. Her studies at school are going well, her social life is good and while her love life is rather nonexistent its by her choice and she’s okay with it since it gives her more time to focus on her studies. The only part of her life that is not quite the way she’d like it to be is her magic. After years of keeping it reigned in and suppressed, her control over electricity is slipping from time to time. Julie says its because Bella was never really trained how to live with her type of magic but only to keep it from harming others. Julie’s magic is predominantly air and while she was able to teach Bella the basics of control, Bella’s powers have been growing and therefore outgrowing Julie’s teachings. Its only a matter of time before Bella’s powers do something she can’t control. She’s in desperate need of some magical guidance and teaching.
