History
Though she doesn’t know the people she was born to, Hope is the daughter of a Werecougar/Alati cross man named Wrath and a human woman named Cecilia though she preferred to be called Cece. Wrath had been involved with Cece for only a few months when she broke the news that she was pregnant. Though he was cautious about giving into the feeling, Wrath was overjoyed and Cece seemed to be too.
Shortly after finding out they were expecting a girl, when Cece was about 4 months along, Wrath got a call from the hospital; from Cece. She told him that she had lost the baby and that she thought it would be too hard to be around him with a constant reminder of what she’d lost and that she was leaving him. Considering his rough childhood, Wrath was devastated to loose not only Cece, the woman he thought he would marry, but the daughter they had made together.
Cece however didn’t miscarry. Nor was she only carrying one baby. She had gone for a routine appointment and when they did an ultrasound they discovered a second heartbeat. With that news she was just feeling smothered and that was the only way she could think of to make herself feel better. That and she planned on giving the babies up for adoption and she knew Wrath wouldn’t approve or agree. She just wasn’t ready to be a mother.
When the time came though, and the babies were born, Cece just couldn’t give them up. She named the girl child Hope, as Wrath had wanted (something having to do with him hoping their daughter’s life would be better than his was). The boy twin she named James just because she liked the name. She raised Hope and James as a single mother until the twins were a year and a half old. Then, feeling smothered once again, Cece left them in a shopping mall figuring that with all the people around, somebody would find Hope and James and take care of them.
Hope and James were placed in foster care and bounced around from family to family, never in one place for more than two years. Even though their homes weren’t long-term both kids handled the stress of the foster system pretty well. That is, until they were 8 and the family they had been living with couldn’t take care of them anymore and no other family could be found to take in a pair of 8 year old twins. So, Hope and James were separated and for a while they even managed to keep in contact through phone calls and email. Unfortunately, at 14 Hope and James lost all contact for what was probably a combination of reason, including her newest foster mother’s strict restrictions on internet, phone, and snail mail.
At 17 Hope had hit the worst foster home in a string of mediocre to bad ones, it also happened to be the one she was in the longest. Though not normally physically abusive, her new foster mother and siblings were very verbally abusive. Only her foster father ever showed any compassion for her and that was rare. She’d only been smacked around by her foster mother sparingly up until recently. The beating she received that landed her in the hospital with a concussion, a sprained wrist and plenty of bruises was the result of Hope’s foster mother catching her kissing a boy. After that incident, as soon as she was released from the hospital, Hope was moved to the community foster care facility where she waited for a new foster home to be found for her.
The only tricky part was that the community foster home had to find somebody that could handle the strange things that happened to Hope before she got knocked unconscious. Hope couldn't for the life of her explain why she had wings burst from her back as she was running from her old foster mother. Nor could she explain the claws that had replaced her fingernails as she'd stuck out in self defense. The foster care system had some idea and they used their hunch to match Hope up with Dion and Tobin, a couple who had taken in another unusual child.
Hope’s first three weeks with Dion and Tobin were all about adjustment. Not only was she now part of a larger family than any of her previous ones, but not a single person in the family was just plain old human. She was shocked to find out that in actuality, at least a third of the population in the city they lived in weren’t human either. They were Others. Angels and Custoss, Vampires, Werecreatures, Magic Users were all real. Well, they were real in that they were the basis for common lore about such creatures and people. In truth though they were quite different from how fantasy portrayed them, including what they were actually called. The world was not at all what Hope had thought it was.
After only three weeks in her new foster home, Hope had a bomb dropped on her by one of her foster sisters, Faith. She was dragged from Dion and Tobin’s home to a house a couple streets over to meet somebody that Faith apparently knew. When the man opened the door Faith immediately asked the man, her brother Wrath, if Hope could possibly be his and when the man pulled out his wallet to show Hope the picture of the woman that would have been his wife, Hope had gotten the shock of her life. She didn’t remember much about her mother but she knew who she was looking at in an instant. It was too much for Hope to process and she bolted, running into town and losing herself in a dance club for hours. When she had finally exhausted herself, she had started home but instead of going to Dion and Tobin’s house she went to Wrath’s. She curled up in his hammock in the back yard and fell asleep. The next morning she was woken by being dumped out of the hammock by Wrath’s other sister Mercy and when she tried to stand up she discovered she was in cougar form, something that had never happened to her before, and she panicked.
Her introduction to her bio father and aunt was rocky at best but in a relatively quick amount of time she relaxed enough to let them in. Even though Faith had found Hope’s dad, Hope continued to live with Dion and Tobin. Sure it would be quieter at Wrath’s house, and while it wasn’t as big as Dion’s it was still big enough to fit her in. But the person she, Faith, felt closest to lived at Dion’s house and Hope really wanted to stay with her for now. Not to mention the horde of children that were constantly running around Dion’s house, including her baby nephew Bram. Hope couldn’t help but think it strange that all her life she’d been hoping for a real family and a home that wouldn’t change after a few years, and only as she was just about to turn 18, when she legally didn’t need either of those things, did she find it. The only thing missing was her brother James.
Shortly after moving in with Dion and Tobin and discovering her birth father Wrath, Hope started working at Dion’s brother’s horse farm to pass the time. The slower pace that horses demanded, and the soothing nature of the creatures, worked wonders on Hope’s battered body and psyche and within six months she was what most people would call a normal 18 year old girl. She still had her timid moments at times, mostly around crowds, but for the most part she was a completely changed girl. She gained confidence and a friendly, open personality toward everybody. While working for Trey, it was discovered that Hope had a natural skill for riding and the man took her under his wing and trained her for the world of show jumping. Once she started training in earnest, Hope moved out to Trey’s farm and earned her way working as an instructor for the younger riding students and the therapeutic riding program Trey ran.
It wasn’t long before Hope was participating in competitions, and she was doing extremely well. It was at one of these competitions that she was taken, beaten, and raped. Somebody had taken her to ruin Trey’s farm’s chances at advancing and getting a rider on the Olympic team. These were the qualifying rounds and Hope had just been doing too well for one of Trey’s old rival’s tastes. Trey, his half-brother Brodie, and Dion hunt for Hope and her captor. By the time Hope was found, 5 days later in a locked windowless tack room on the rival’s farm, it was already too late to do a rape kit, and too late for the morning after pill. To this day the trio won’t tell Hope which one of them killed the man who hurt her, only that he was taken care of.
Three weeks after her initial capture, Hope starts to feel sick and she confides in her boyfriend Eli who suggests she take a pregnancy test. When it came back positive she was just walking out of the bathroom, with a dumbfounded look on her face and the test in her hand, when Trey walked by. He took in her look and the stick in her hand, as well as the concern on Eli’s face, and put everything together. It took him some time to process the situation but he agreed to keep Hope’s secret as she decided what she wanted to do about the baby. Until she was 4 months along and finally showing, nobody but Hope, Eli and Trey knew about the new life she was carrying. When everybody else finally finds out about the baby there are some hurt feelings, some anger at the man who had hurt her, and cautious congratulations on her decision to raise the baby. After all she was only 19, had a budding career in both the Others and the Human show jumping worlds, and was scheduled to start taking college classes in the fall. It was an awful lot for a young woman to take on at once.
Gift, a boy, was born in 2010, nine months after his mother’s capture. His red hair and green eyes started rumors that Trey was actually the father of the boy and while Trey was happy to be a father figure/glorified babysitter to the boy so Hope could go to school, he often reminded people that he’d never been attracted to women a day in his life. Both Hope and Trey found it humorous that people tried to say that the only reason Hope was riding for Three Willows was because she was sleeping with him.
