Basic History
Corrine believes that her brother killed her father on the day of her birth. Darius has never disabused her of this notion. Only three people know the truth of Corrine’s father’s identity. Darius knows because he is her father. Carmine knows because he was there. Genesis knows because Darius can’t keep that secret from his wife. Corrine’s mother, Josephine, died fifty years after her daughter’s birth.
Darius, as a younger Custos, slept with his succubus stepmother. His father, Eryck, was pleased when his wife came up pregnant. He, despite her occupation, believed the child to be his. Up until the day of her birth, no one truly knew who fathered Corrine. When she was born, Corrine bore the crest of Darius DeLorme and her mother, rather then of Eryck. That crest faded as she aged and, by the time she was four years old, was no longer visible in any form.
When he saw that he’d fathered a child, Darius put a carefully planned operation into action. He overthrew his father. Even though he became the Fifth Layer Overlord, he kept Corrine’s parentage a secret. His enemies would see an infant daughter as a weak point. They’d assume that he’d see an infant sister as a rival for power.
Darius raised Corrine to believe that she was his much younger sister. To tell her at this point in her life that she was his first born would mean castration and, possibly, death.
Corrine thinks she’s had an average life for a Custos. She works both with and in the Fifth Layer Mounted Force. She’s a ranked officer and one of the trainers. She’s spent her entire adult life working in the Dark Horse International Corporation. She wasn’t even bothered when Darius gave her “grandnephew” Trey the position of C.E.O. Let him deal with corporate intrigue and give her the horses any day.
She was, at one time, beholden to Phobeter, the Greek personification of nightmares, but the god was more interested in what she could do as the daughter of the succubus then a vengeance Custos. When the deity was more interested in her body then what she could offer, Corrine left and took shelter under The Morrigan.
Phobeter, angered by Corrine’s abandonment, attempted to smite her. After all, who turned down the chance to be the mistress of a god? (Corrine was not pleased to learn that all she would be was a mistress to keep the deity’s bed warm). The Morrigan, having accepted Corrine’s offer of servitude as a vengeance and war Custos, protected her.
The two struck up a bargain. In exchange for allowing Corrine to keep spiders as her familiars, she’d be The Morrigan’s Envoy and Harbinger of Death. Her presence to someone who’d knowingly angered The Morrigan would mean death.
Outside of her work as a Custos, Corrine is the Premier Trainer and Riding Instructor (second only to Trey) in the Dark Horse International Corporation. She first worked at the flagship stable outside of Le Havre, France and she’s now at the Three Rivers Stable on the East Coast of the U.S.
She has her own small herd of horses, which include the cornerstone stallion Dragon’s Bane. She inherited him when Darius’ twin sister died in battle. Her personal mount, Dragon Spider, is well trained and enjoys savaging people, animals, and inanimate objects.
The horses are her sole focus while on the mortal plane and she usually has to be forced into attending company functions. It was at one such function, the annual holiday bash, when her daughter was conceived.
She’d set her sights on young wolven-hybrid, mostly to distract herself from the other party attendees. Corrine rarely uses the abilities inherited from her mother but she used them that night to lure the young man into an empty bedroom.
When she realized that she was pregnant, Corrine indulged in an hour long cursing spree. She meant to tell the wolf, as they were coworkers, but she never got around to it. By the time the child, named Darcy, was born, Corrine had given up on letting him know.
After a month of trying to juggle the baby, her duties for Dark Horse and her duties to a demanding deity, Corrine gave up. She took Darcy to Darius and asked him and his wife to raise the girl. She was not cut out to be a mother.
Darcy, now 13 and rebellious, thinks of Corrine as a big sister instead of a mother. Corrine, now working at Three Rivers with Darcy’s father (who still doesn’t know), is careful to schedule visits away from the farm.
