Like so many of the Dark Ones/Others, Elementals are thought to be nothing more than fairy tales but this isn’t true. There are actually quite a few different races of elementals roaming the Earth and while some truly are as rare and mysterious as the fairy tales would indicate, others walk among the human race in similar numbers to their fellow Others.
Typically the Elementals are grouped by which element gave rise to their race, or the element that gives them their unique abilities. Some of these various elements are the Primary Elements of:
~Fire
~Water
~Air
~Earth
~Life (sometimes called Spirit)
~Light
~Magic.
Some of these Primary Elements are then further broken down into Callings (specialties) like this:
~Water - Water & Ice
~Earth - Stone & Plant
~Life/Spirit - Life & Death
~Light - Light & Dark
~Magic - Order & Chaos
While many Elementals are truly of only one element, it isn’t unheard of for some to have a secondary element referred to as a Touch. One such example would be a Forest Nymph with a Primary Element of Earth whose Calling was Plant with a Touch of Life. Basically she will have more influence over, or a greater ability with plants but her particular Touch will enable her to possibly even work with the animals in the forests as they normally would fit into the Life Element/Calling.
Aside from being grouped by their Primary Element, Elementals are also grouped according to the Region. Now, Regions aren’t exactly like geography regions but instead special categories referring to the type of climate or location they live in. For example, not all Water Elementals live in oceans. Some live in lakes, or rivers or springs and each of these would be considered a Region. Another example would be various Earth Elemental Regions of mountains, deserts, plains or valleys.
The final way of grouping Elementals is by their actual race. This is the most basic and simplest way to group them but also has the most variations. Water Elementals alone have the races of Undines, Merfolk, Naiads, Oceanids, Nereids, Nixie and even more. For a more complete list, please go to the Elemental Races List also in this sub-forum.
