History
Sokemmi was born and raised in a brothel in an old west town in what is now considered eastern Washington. Her given name was Selene but with her exotic looks the brothel owner wanted her to have a more “native” name like her mother’s. Sokemmi’s mother was the oldest daughter of a local Native American woman and a Greek immigrant. The two had fallen head over heels in love but when they wound up having more children than they could support Sacnite went to work for the brothel to help support her family.
Sacnite was only 15 when the tall handsome foreigner came through town. He spotted Sacnite working in the saloon below the brothel and he was as taken by her as Sacnite’s father had been of her mother. Dymion was a travelling Animulus Alati in search of possible new settlement sites for his people. Considering his immortality, it wasn’t an issue for him to stop and “settle” in the town for a few years while he first romanced Sacnite, and then tried convincing her to go away with him. Despite her profession, Dymion did not sleep with Sacnite immediately, nor did he ask her to stop working to help support her family. His paid time with her was spent talking with, and telling “stories” to her about far off lands constantly covered in snow and ice, of island cities crumbling into the sea, and of other cities made entirely of gold.
At 17 Sacnite gave birth to a beautiful baby daughter who looked strikingly like her foreign father. She had the same delicate bone structure of his face, long delicate fingers, and startling amber eyes (even from birth) framed by rich brown curly hair. Upon the girl’s birth, Dymion asked Sacnite to name the girl Selene after his chosen Goddess. She agreed. Shortly after Selene’s birth Dymion disappeared from the town. Sacnite never knew why he left and she was heartbroken for the rest of her short life, missing her lover and the father of her daughter. When Selene was only two years old, Sacnite heard rumors that the brothel owner had chased away or killed Dymion to prevent her from leaving the brothel and when she confronted him about it, threatening to leave anyway, she didn’t come out of his office alive.
At this point, Selene became Sokemmi and she was bounced around between the various women of the brothel to mother her. She didn’t think her life was strange or inappropriate as it was all she’d ever know. Once she reached “working” age, the brothel owner had the older women teach her the ways of her profession and then promptly started shoving her at any man he thought wouldn’t hurt his exotic treasure. For the most part the owner’s guesses were spot on, but one night when she was 16 one of Sokemmi’s regulars was a bit more drunk than usual and he got too rough with her. She tried to fight him off but to no avail. When she finally just gave up and gave in, Sokemmi felt herself slipping out of herself and to her complete and utter shock she watched as her body flared and changed, softly furred wings sprouted from her back, her hair and eye color changing, and a strange tattoo appearing at the back of her neck. She also then watched as the man who had been trying to force her from behind, grabbed each of her wings in turn and tried to dig them out of her shoulders with the large knife he wore in a sheath that was always strapped to his ribs.
After that one incident, Sokemmi wasted with fever brought on by infection spread by the man’s knife. She was taken from the brothel by her mother’s family and given into the care of a healer from her grandmother’s tribe. While in her fevered state her wings emerged many more times and her grandmother’s people viewed her as a nature spirit trapped in a human body. They had no idea of what the Alati truly were, but like many other people they had legends and myths. Unfortunately, when Sokemmi’s fever finally broke her body was too weak to regain consciousness and she was eventually lost and forgotten, tucked away in a sacred cave.
When she finally ‘awoke’, Sokemmi was in a strange place. The walls and floor were white and hard and cold. She was wearing strange clothes, pants and a shirt like a man and a very scratchy dressing robe. It took her a while to come around enough to speak, but she was able to observe for months before her voice returned to her. Once she recovered enough, Sokemmi was able to finally give her name to the hospital staff and they were able to explain that she was found wandering in strangly well preserved traditional Native American clothing in the mountains around a town in the eastern part of the state. They also told her that she had been brought west because of better medical and mental facilities. Aside from her name, the only thing Sokemmi could remember was her age, 16 years old, and as soon as the hospital staff discovered she was a minor they started working to get her into foster care.
As soon as a family was found to care for her, Sokemmi left the hospital and started a new life in Cedar Valley where she struggled through three years of high school and rigorous after school and summer programs to help her “remember” all the facts that she had supposedly forgotten. She settled into her new life fairly well, despite the insane schooling she had to deal with and once she graduated high school she went straight on to college at the local University.
