History
Nova is the result of a one night stand between her mother Sophia and a wandering water elemental. Sophia didn’t tell the man because she knew where he went after that night. She knew his name, Kamen, that he was a water elemental and that he made his way by being a stone carver. She often told her youngest these facts while embellishing their short lived affair.
Though the idea of her father always fascinated Nova, the young hybrid had other things on her mind. She lived in a small town on the Washington coast that offered little in the way of tourism. They did have some summer residents and that is what got Nova into trouble.
The summer of her sixteenth year, when the other world residents returned to the town, Nova met Kyle Marsden. He was a nice young man, a Curantis who primarily lived in the sea. This was the summer her manifested his wings for the first time and his parents, the leaders of the traveling pod, threw a large celebration.
Nova went to the party and snuck off with Kyle. They remained friends throughout that summer and liked hanging out together. Once fall returned, Kyle and his family left and discovered that she was pregnant. Kyle was the only boy she’d slept with and there was no way to talk to him until he returned the next summer.
Nova told her mother and siblings. While Justyn and Carmen were very accepting and understanding over the situation that Nova found herself in, Sophia lost it. Throughout Nova’s life, Sophia had behaved more like a friend rather than a mother to her children. She went on and on about Nova not respecting her and throwing away all that she’d done for her daughter.
It was true that Nova had never wanted for anything but she found it hard to take Sophia seriously. What kind of example was a woman who’d had her first child at the age of 17 and then ripped into someone who’d done the same thing? Unable to stay with her mother, Nova moved in with her grandmother, Abra. Shortly before her 17th birthday, Nova gave birth to Layla.
They stayed in her grandmother’s house until the summer residents, Kyle included, returned to the beach. When they were first sighted by the fishing vessels, Nova headed down to the beach where the roving pack of Alati would swim into. In one swift move, Kyle met his daughter and Nova met his mate, Peter McWilliams.
She’d never hoped for anything romantic with Kyle but seeing him with another man had been shocking. And a bit insulting, actually. Had she been so bad that she’d driven him to find satisfaction in me? Peter, as Kyle was still stunned by the baby girl with his eyes, made the introductions.
He also told Nova not to take their relationship personally; that Kyle had been very into girls and he’d had to drag the guy out to the middle of nowhere just to get Kyle to look at him. By the time Kyle regained the power of speech, his mother had noticed the situation. She’d quickly taken stock and had starting cooing at her first grandchild.
She was quickly accepted as one of the pod and, in the fall, she went with them to their winter resting grounds in the Caribbean. Justyn, her 34 year old brother, went with her so that she wasn’t completely without family. They travelled down the pacific coast, through the Panama Canal and into the Caribbean Sea. There, they discovered that the pod’s winter home was an island located inside the infamous Bermuda Triangle. This island was part of the rebuilt Atlantis.
For the next four years she lived with the pod, traveling between Atlantis and that tiny town on the Oregon coast. Over those years, brother and sister learned plenty. Justyn finally found his own deity and path. He also found his mates in Kyle’s parents, the leaders of the pod.
Nova met Mira Monroe during her first week on Atlantis. The woman was a water elemental who lived on the main island and she offered to teach Nova about her other heritage. Nova became her student, learning about the water elementals and what they did in the world.
Mira was a friend and confidant to Nova but her sister, Grace, was the one who shamelessly pursued Nova. Eventually, Nova gave in and was surprised at how much she enjoyed being with the woman. Eventually thought, all things came to an end and the break between Nova and Grace was bad.
Bad enough that Nova couldn’t stay with the pod as Grace wouldn’t leave her alone even though they’d separated. But she didn’t want to go back to her hometown. It was Mira who suggest Cedar Valley, Washington to her. Mira thought that the northwest town might have been where Nova’s father had settled. She’d heard rumors of an ancient elemental named Kamen who loved in the mountains outside of the town. So, with daughter in tow, Nova set out for Cedar Valley. Once there she found a nice place on the river that had enough space for all their stuff. And recently, some of the fantastical jewelry she designs had been picked up by a local art dealer.
The same one that represents a Kamen Dragov, elemental stone carver.
