History
Echo’s life started out well enough, being conceived by two loving parents. Only, not too long after her mother Aileen got pregnant her family’s world was ripped apart by violence. Her father Duncan had been hunting a clan of vampires in the Scottish Highlands where they lived and he and his comrades had killed all but one small child vampire that they didn’t find. Or they thought they had. Some of the clan had been away and when they returned to find the child alone surrounded by their dead, the survivors had gone on the hunt for those that had decimated their family.
Echo’s family wasn’t the only one that suffered at the hands of the returned vampires, all of those who had killed the vampires were killed in turn, but hers was the only one that they took a personal interest in. When they bit Aileen and she turned, their clan’s rather weak ability manifested exponentially stronger in her; the ability to see and communicate with spirits. Because of Aileen’s gifts, they took her into their fold as well as her daughter and her unborn babe.
After the events that turned both Aileen and her older sister Avalon, as well as Echo while in utero, Aileen went insane. At first it was the presence of her deceased husband trying to talk to her like he’d never died, then she started seeing a woman seemingly sharing Avalon’s body or at the very least always being within touching distance. What finally tipped her off the deep end was when Echo was born and another woman seemed to be doing the same thing with her. Aileen was convinced the ghosts had come to collect the souls of her bloodthirsty Custos children and she almost wished they would so that she wouldn’t have to be tortured by their cursed existence anymore.
More than once Aileen tried to kill her daughters and eventually both girls were taken from her and given to members of the vampire clan to raise as both girls were vampires themselves.
Unfortunately for Avalon, the woman that took her in considered her more of a pet she could use to her likely rather than as a daughter. The first five years after her turning Avalon has completely lost the memories of, either by the grace of some unknown deity or because she was so traumatized that her brain just locked away that part of her life.
Echo was named such by her caregivers because she seemed to be an echo of her older sister in appearance. Her caregivers weren’t exactly kindly to her but they saw to her needs and made sure she was sufficiently cared for. Echo didn’t want for anything, and they were quite pleased at both the manifestation of her vampire ability and by the surprising additions of telekinesis and pyrokinesis. It is unknown where she got the last two skills but Avalon believes their father had a gift of fire and her mother one for telekinesis but she is not totally certain.
When Echo was 5 and Avalon 17 the older girl finally came out of her fog and stole her baby sister away, leaving their mother in the hands of their captors. As Aileen was really the one the vampires wanted for her ability they let the girls go, expecting them to return or wind up dead if they stayed on their own for too long. On their fourth night away from the clan the girls came to a village and Echo’s bloodlust peaked. It took all of Avalon’s strength to manage the younger girl, but in the end Echo used her abilities to toss her big sister aside and set fire to the village in her anger at being denied what she was hungry for.
Staying in the village was a man who the locals whispered was a Lord of Custoss disguised as a human and it was he who finally calmed little Echo. The man’s red-eyed black warhorse ran straight at Echo and the man swooped her up into his arms and offered her his arm for her meal. Avalon watched in horror as the man let her sister feed on him because she had no recollection of just what they both were now. When Echo was sated, the man let her snooze on his saddle as he rode over to her big sister and pulled her up behind him stating that he needed to remove both of them from Scotland immediately. The next thing Avalon knew the stallion was carrying all three of them through a shimmering in the air before them.
Life after that changed dramatically for the girls. They stayed with Darius Delorme, the man who had rescued them both from the consequences of Echo’s outburst, until Avalon was legally old enough to care for her sister and he was able to find them suitable vampire mentors. Avalon and Echo then moved to be nearer to the vampires chosen by Darius, with frequent visits “home” to see him and report on their progress.
The girls’ mentors moved frequently and after a while the pair grew tired of following them and they settled in Maine where they stayed for many years, switching towns when their lack of aging became suspicious. Echo eventually decided that college was a good idea if she ever wanted to go anywhere professionally with her passion for music. To help pay their bills while she was in college, Echo had a part time job at a local Music and Comic Book shop which she loved. She got to play around on guitars and other instruments as well as listen to any music she wanted.
The only bad part to Echo’s job was that having electric guitars in the shop sometimes brought in the wrong kind of people. Most of the time she just shrugged them all off and they would go away. But over a period of about six months, three men fixated on the “hot girl in the music store” and they went from annoying flirting while she was working to stalking her and eventually sneaking into the shop one night as she was closing up and taking turns with her body. She had long ago learned to control her gifts and when she needed them to defend herself she couldn’t summon them. She tried to burn them, tried to throw them, tried to topple displays on top of all of them but nothing happened. Nothing except her getting hurt both physically and emotionally.
When they finally left her, bloody on the shop floor, she called her sister who hurried over immediately. When Avalon saw the mess the men had made of her sister she said she was going to call Darius but Echo made her promise not to. Not able to deny her sister’s wishes, Avalon just called 911 instead and stayed by her side for days until she seemed well enough to be left alone. Only, when Avalon returned from her quick trip to the grocery store, she found their bathroom door locked and saw smoke drifting out under it. Echo had just gone in to take a bath but she had cut herself shaving and with the sight of her own blood she lost control. She tried using the razor on her wrists and when that didn’t seem to cut deep enough her temper flared and so did the shower curtain which scared Echo so badly that she jumped away from the flames and she hit her head on the edge of the cast iron clawfoot tub, knocking herself unconscious. When Avalon pried the bathroom door open, she found Echo in a tub full of bloody water and flames crawling all over her bathroom.
After that incident, Echo tried returning to work claiming that some normality would help her heal. Only it didn’t. The men never came into the shop again, but they would follow her down the street calling insults at her as she passed by. Unable to take it anymore, Echo has decided to move from Maine to Washington to be closer to Darius in hopes that eventually she’ll work up the nerve to tell him what happened.
