History
Born in 497AD, Guinevere Aria Danann is the daughter of the Lady of the Lake and the great-grandaughter of the goddess Eiru, the queen of the Tuatha de Danann. Who her father is nobody is quite sure and it was never a big loss to her not knowing as she was raised by Eiru.
She spent the first 20 years of her life living among the Tuatha de Danann and only left them when she wed King Arthur. Before she was even born she had been promised to Arthur as he was the bearer of Excalibur, the sword of the Goddess Eiru, and any child born of the Lady of the Lake would become the sword’s guardian. Though, in this case, the sword she would be guarding wouldn’t be just the hunk of metal but also the man.
As many know, the story of King Arthur didn’t end well and was filled with controversy surrounding Guinevere and the Knight Lancelot. In truth, Lancelot was the third member of the Triad required by any God-sword and was the lover of both Arthur and Guinevere. When Arthur died in battle at the hand of Mordred, Lancelot witnessed his liege-lover’s death and went into a berserker rage. He took out many foes but ultimately he too lost his life, leaving Guinevere alone. After the battle the sword disappeared from the mortal world, and Guinevere with it.
First Guinevere returned to her great-grandmother for solace at the loss of her husband and her lover. To help her heal her heart, Eiru sent Guinevere to the Isle of Avalon where she knew she would be safe. When she left, Guinevere visited her mother one last time at her lake. While she was there, the Lady of the Lake instructed Guinevere on how to hide away the sword until it was needed in the world again and until a new bearer was born for it. Seeing her daughter’s despair at the prospect of having to wait around for possibly hundreds of years until her soulmates returned to her, the Lady gave Guinevere a spell to use on herself when she was ready. It would put Guinevere into a magical slumber, only to awaken when the sword knew its bearer had returned to life.
Guinevere thanked her mother, bid her farewell, and departed for Avalon. Guinevere’s trip to Avalon was fast and easy, the crossing to the Isle was smooth. It wasn’t until Guinevere set foot on Avalon that the mists closed in around the Isle, cutting off all access to the outside world. The sword had returned home to the place where it had been crafted and it had not brought it’s bearer home with it. Avalon, like Excalibur and like Guinevere, had now effectively disappeared from the mortal world until a new bearer claimed the sword.
Guinevere spent a few years wandering Avalon, learning from the Alati trapped on the Isle with her how to control her budding Fae magic, her elemental powers of Order and Ice. At first it was difficult translating Alati teachings to those of the Fae but eventually they worked things out and Guinevere was able to give the children of the Isle snow to play with in the middle of summer. Before long, however, Guinevere tired of waiting and she retreated to the hidden room that guarded the hidden entrance to the labyrinth of caves deep underneath the castle and cast the spell given to her by her mother as well as a few of her own that she had learned that would waken her prematurely if anybody disturbed Excalibur.
When Guinevere woke, it was to the humming of Excalibur in her blood declaring that her Triad was complete once more and that she was to return the sword to its bearer immediately. A little disgruntled at being ordered around before she even knew how long she’d been asleep, Guinevere fetched the sword quickly, then reintroduced herself to the Alati still trapped on Avalon. Some were the same, some were their descendants, but all were eager for Guinevere to leave Avalon and find the new Arthur so that they could finally leave their island prison.
Now even more disgruntled, Guinevere quickly readied herself and left Avalon. As soon as she rejoined the mortal world, Guinevere was in for a shock. Nearly 1500 years had passed since the deaths of Arthur and Lancelot, and with those years passing, so many things had changed. Finding all the change in the world, and knowing that her soulmates would not be the same people as they once were, Guinevere decided it was time for her to change as well. She cut short her long curly locks and decided to be called by her middle name, Aria. A new name and a new look for her new life.
She has been searching for Excalibur’s bearer and the third member of the triad for 5 years, returning home to Avalon periodically when she becomes discouraged in her search. She has finally exhausted the search in Scotland, Wales and England and is now turning her eyes toward Ireland as Excalibur insists that its new bearer is of old Celtic blood.
