History
Charis was born a Princess of Atlantis. Her parents were the mates of the High King of Atlantis and she was loved by all. She had the best tutors and was rarely told no. Even still, she wasn’t spoiled and she loved life. With the full run of Atlantis, Charis ran a little wild, pressing her guards to keep up with her.
Even though she was somewhat sheltered, Charis knew about the strife that was starting to brew in Atlantis and she demanded that she be taught to defend herself. Her fathers taught her to wield many weapons but she loved bows and arrows. She was one of the best archers in the country.
When she was 50, Charis caught the eye of the Custos Ariston, a young captain of the guard. She flirted with the captain, teasing him until he eventually started formally courting the young woman. Eventually, they married and he became a prince of the family. A few years after that, tragedy struck when the king of Atlantis died of a wound received during a hunting trip. The whole Alati world went into mourning at the death of their king but things had to happen.
The inheritance of Atlantis didn’t pass from father to child but to the next man or woman who could hold the Trident of Atlantis. That man proved to Ariston and he took up the role of King and he took up the search for his other mate. Any being who wielded a god tool, such as the Trident of Atlantis, had two mates. Ariston found the Curantis Gaios. The three were happy together and soon Charis was pregnant with Gaios’ child. The first born Princess, Alexius, was doted on.
Outside of the triad’s comfortable family life, the strife in and around Atlantis was growing. Those who were Custos wanted the Curantis to pull their weight and the other way around. There were those who wanted to end the harmony in Atlantis. One night, not long after the birth of her second child, Galene (father was Ariston), the anger reached the breaking point and Atlantis fell.
While the island was crumbling around them, a group of now fallen Custos Alati rushed the royal residence in order to try and take the Trident of Atlantis and to kill the King. They succeeded in killing Ariston and Gaios but were thwarted in ending the lives of Charis and her daughters. A group of Animulus Alati rescued them, pulling them from the crumbling castle and onto a ship.
Charis had been wounded, a devastating injury that threatened her life. The wound to her hip kept her from walking for many years but that was all right because the people on that ship sailed around for years, looking for a place to live. No one seemed to want to harbor the former queen of Atlantis. After a long journey, they settled in Atlantis, founding the place known as Haven.
For Charis, the years past in agony. She lived in pain. This pain came not only from the injury to her hip but because her mates were gone. The gods told her that the souls of her mates were lost. Slowly, as she lived a sort of half-life, Charis started to hear more than just her own deity – she was hearing all the known deities the world over. The voices did much to fill the void and she started to live again.
She still couldn’t move without pain but she could take her training and rule Haven. From her bed, she turned a disorganized jumble of settlers into a working colony. Determined to keep Haven alive, Charis decreed that everyone in Haven were equals. They would all pull their equal shares of work and they would all be devoted to all the gods. She made Haven work.
But she was lonely still. Her children and grandchildren only went so far to fill that void. The gods have never been able to locate the souls of her mates. She’s forced herself to be content to wait and to do what she can to heal the world. In all the years she’s ruled Haven, Charis as only shown her fury once, when one of the brood tried to break up a God Tool Triad.
With the force of the gods behind her, she cursed a red brood to only breed up black brood.
