History
Narek was raised by people who pounded Brood history into him. It was pounded into him so often that he became a fanatic about being a proper brood. Out of all things, being a Black Brood was the worst thing possible. Narek didn’t befriend Black broods and sought to destroy every one he came across. He wasn’t alone in this; there are many brood who believe that all Blacks should be drowned at birth.
Narek was admired among the brood. He was handsome, intelligent and strong. He was a natural leader. He found a mate, a female red from a prominent family, and became a leader within his holding. He had a good life but then he made a mistake. He’d heard of a Black brood who’d not only decided to have children but to have them within someone who was not Brood. To Narek, this was the ultimate insult.
In reponse, he launched an attack on this Black Brood and his Alati wife. Narek’s mistake was not researching about his advisory. The Black and his Alati wife were the mates of a powerful Alati lord. A lord who was not just a Lord; he was the Custos King of France, the overlord of Europe and the bearer of the God Sword Shattersoul. As the Brood didn’t have much to do with the Alati and their gods, Narek didn’t understand what this meant.
He took his troops and attacked the Black Brood – he succeeded in kidnapping the Brood, the Alati, and their Halfling child. He held them captive, planning to make an example of them with a public execution. And then the Alati lord attacked, creating devastation in his charge to reclaim his mates.
In the aftermath of this attack, through the Alati wife, Narek was cursed by the Alati gods to only produce Black Brood. Narek laughed the curse off. He didn’t believe that the gods of the Alati had any power over him and he was loyal to his red brood mate – there was no way that he could father a black.
Years after the attack, once Narek had rebuild his holding, he finally became a father. Everyone waiting with anticipation for the egg to hatch. And everyone was astonished when the resulting child was a black dragon. Doubt was cast on Narek’s mate, many claiming that she must have cheated on Narek to have a black infant. No one commented when the black dragon infant vanished. Narek knew the truth as he’d watched his mate drown the child. Within years, a second black dragon followed his elder brother’s death and this time, Narek’s mate took her own life as well.
By this time, with the birth of a second black dragon with two red parents, many started to believe that there was weight behind the idea of a cursed brood. Some started to turn away from Narek.
Mateless, childless, and now losing those who’d followed him, Narek didn’t know what to do. He convinced himself that he wasn’t cursed but that his now deceased mate had slept with others not of her color. It wasn’t his fault and that curse was just nonsense. He eventually left his holding and found another where he wooed and courted another red female of a prominent family.
When she bore a black brood, the people of her holding didn’t believe Narek’s claims that she’d slept with another. Not only was that holding only for reds but the female was deeply in love with Narek. She wouldn’t have slept with another. As for his mate, when she saw the color of the infant, she despaired and then drowned both herself and infant in the river. Angered that Narek had brought this curse to their clan, the female’s family chased him from the holding and have been hunting him ever since.
Once a proud leader in the brood, Narek is now hunted for doing what he believed right.
