History
The youngest of four girls, Bryn was a product of a drunken one night stand between her mother and a stranger in town. He was handsome, had black hair that looked green in the moonlight, and striking green eyes. Crystal could have even sworn that at some point during their coupling in the alley behind the bar, and then later in the trailer she and her three older girls called home, that he'd had wings. He left in the night, Crystal woke up the next morning, and life went on as normal until she started showing familiar signs of pregnancy.
Having gotten herself pregnant twice before in such a manner (only her third daughter was planned), Crystal already knew that the Pack Elders wouldn't allow her to abort so she didn't even bother. She swore she was going to put the baby up for adoption but they wouldn't allow that either. True Wolven were rare, growing in numbers but still rare, so they wanted to keep tabs on any offspring of members of their pack. And that meant that when Bryn was born her mother was stuck raising her.
Bryn has always known that her mother didn't want her, and as such learned early on to be very independent. As she grew, her level of independence drove her mother crazy because she wouldn't accept help or follow directions from anybody. The only adults she had any respect for were her martial arts teachers, and the Pack's Alphas and Elders. After all, they valued her as a student and as a person much more than her mother or other teachers did (she disliked regular school because she found it was boring).
Despite knowing how much her mother didn't want her, Bryn never felt any desire to leave her. Not until she had her first Shift. The night of her first Shift, the Pack was running the hills on a hunt. She'd been left at the campfire with the other teens who hadn't yet had their first Shift and when she came to the next morning she was shocked to find herself locked in the basement of the Alphas' house. When she finally got somebody to let her out, one of the other teens she'd been at the campfire with, they were watching her warily.
Only after it was explained to her by her Alphas that she'd taken on green dragon wings did she understand the strange looks. She was just as confused as they were and when she asked her mother when she finally got home, all Crystal had to say was that it just figured that she wouldn't be allowed to abort a freak.
After the incident with her mother, Bryn wound up living with the Alphas until she finished high school and even through her first year of college. That entire time she managed to avoid her mother. She'd see her at Pack functions, but they never interacted. It was the summer between her first and second years of college that things finally came to a head with her mother. Bryn can't even remember what prompted it, aside from her mother being drunk again, but the fight she had with Crystal left the older woman hospitalized. As a result Bryn left her hometown, her Pack, and her entire life behind. Apparently the dragon had made itself known again, this time in defense of herself, and there is no way that a drunk wolf could win against a defensive dragon.
The longer she was gone from the influence of the Pack, the more frequently the dragon surfaced and Bryn was getting worried that eventually she'd wind up hurting somebody who didn't actually deserve it. As discreetly as possible she started asking around about dragons and she was eventually directed to a place in the mountains of Armenia of all places. She wasn't told exactly who she'd find there, just that they would be able to help her. Turns out she'd been sent to a Clan of misfit dragons who called themselves Brood. What she learned there about the other half of heritage was mind-boggling. She'd grown up as one of the Others so she was used to weird, but finding out that dragons were actually pretty widespread around the globe just mystified her. All of her favorite stories as a child had included dragons, and now she was half dragon herself!
Shortly after her arrival at the Armenian mountain Holding, an often absent leader of the Clan returned home to help handle an emergency with an infant black brood. She didn't get to see him more than just walking around holding the baby, but when she heard him talking to the baby to soothe it, he was talking about his work. That's how she first heard about the dragon compound with dragons that didn't turn into people and their soldier riders. Her interest was perked, but he was gone before she had a chance to approach him about it.
After little more than a month, Bryn was ready to leave the Holding. She wasn't in control, and they didn't really want her to leave, but she couldn't stand the constant sniping between Clan members. She quickly learned that Brood can be very politically charged and that just grated. When Voski, the man she'd seen with the baby before, returned to the Holding for a meeting she jumped at her chance to escape. Surely the other leaders of the Clan wouldn't mind her leaving if she was under his supervision.
After talking to him for only a few minutes, Bryn felt like she'd found a kindred spirit and he agreed to speak up to get her allowed out of the Holding. His reasoning to the other leaders was that of all the places her shifting forms unpredictably, the compound was just as safe as the Holding. They relented, and Bryn left with Voski the next day.
It didn't take her long to settle in at the dragon compound and she found her martial arts skills quite useful in training new rider and caretaker recruits in the basics of hand-to-hand combat.
