History
Voski is the result of a clan war. Two clans vying for the same territory, one already established in the area and another trying to give the established clan the boot, fought bitter battles and finally the old clan was able to hold their ground. Voski’s father was a member of the losing clan but before they retreated he and many of the others left behind some unwanted “gifts” for the old clan. Some of the female warriors of the established clan that had been captured were in their breeding cycle and the males of the losing clan took advantage of that and mated with them. As the two clans were of different colors, there was a good chance that at least some of the resulting children would be blacks.
When the children started to be born, it was a shock to the clan of the mothers when out of the 11 of them only two were born black. The other black youngling was killed upon birth by his mother’s mate. Voski’s mother, however, was unmated and she was given two choices. One of her brothers or her father could kill him, or he could be delivered to his father’s clan so that they would be saddle with the shame of a having a black dragon in their clan.
Her father and three of her brothers were in favor of killing Voski, but during her pregnancy she had gotten rather attacked to the life growing inside of her. Not to mention she had also gotten rather attached to his father during her captivity. Unwilling to admit to the latter, Voski’s mother asked her younger brother Arax, the only one not in favor of killing the infant, to carry him away to his father.
It took Arax nearly six months to track down Voski’s father’s clan and by the time he’d found them the boy child had bonded with him in the natural way of Brood children. Unable to just leave him somewhere he’d be found, because of the bond, Arax walked bold as can be right into the Holding of the rival clan with Voski held out in front of him as a sort of truce offering.
Voski’s father’s clan nearly killed the child on sight knowing just what he was, but Arax protected him fiercely and killed three of the clan’s warriors before they all backed off and Voski’s father was summoned. Voski’s father named him, accepted him as his son, and then abandoned him to the care of his uncle a lone gold in a red Holding.
Voski’s childhood was awful. The other younglings his age constantly attacked him in both dragon and human form. Even those that were results of the war attacked him because unlike him, they had been graced with only one of their parents’ colors. His magic was wild and unruly, Voski became surly and nearly as unruly as his magic. Only Arax was able and willing to help control him when things were at the most out of control.
Finally, when Voski reached 50 years old he left the Holding. He wasn’t ready, his magic was certainly not under control, but anything had to be better than the almost daily beatings he suffered at the hands and claws of his peers and elders both. Still being bonded to the boy, Arax was able to follow him and caught up with him in short order. Luckily he even managed to find him before he lost his temper and his magic flared uncontrollably.
The two travelled Europe and Asia for many years, Arax doing his best to educate Voski in both the ways of the Brood and also in more human ways. It wasn’t until Voski was nearly 200 that they found a clan that actually wanted them to join them, a clan with members of all different colors. There were even a handful of other black dragons in the clan and Voski, for the first time, was a respected member of his species rather than an abomination needing to be disposed of.
The time spent among the members of their new clan eased the weary hearts and spirits of the two men and in surprisingly short order Arax took a mate, a young gold female not much older than Voski himself. With the mating of his uncle, the bond between Voski and Arax dissolved leaving the younger male truly alone for the first time in his life. It was only then that he realized just how big a part of his life Arax had been and even with the bond broken, Voski still spent as much time with his uncle as Arax’s new life permitted.
While his uncle moved on in life, taking a mate and having children, Voski had never had children. Even among the more accepting clan it was highly looked down upon for blacks to take mates, or even risk (let alone trying) having children. They were allowed relationships but if the female in the relationship (black or otherwise) were anywhere near her mating cycle the pair would be separated until after the risk of a child was past. Thanks to this, Voski discovered that he wasn’t only interested in women and during those times he wasn’t allowed to be with his current female companion Voski often spent his nights in the arms of another male in the Holding.
Peace surrounded Voski and Arax for over 300 years before their world came crashing down. In a horrible twist of fate, events similar to those that had given life to Voski in the first place repeated themselves. A new clan to the region had decided they didn’t like the inclusive ways of Voski’s clan and had decided to “take care” of the perceived problem. Their numbers were greater, they were a clan of only golds. Their clan leader just happened to be one of Arax’s older brothers. Feeling totally betrayed, Arax headed off to battle without the support of his clan and was slaughtered as a traitor for raising the cursed child of their sister.
It took the combined strength of the other blacks in the clan to keep Voski in check long enough for the clan to escape the brutal attacks of the gold warriors being led by his other uncle. Voski raged against his clan members for weeks and it wasn’t until they had finally slipped away to safety that his clan members finally released him. They knew how loyal he was to the clan, that he wouldn’t purposely do anything to put his extended family at risk, and Voski knew this as well and it was what decided him that he must leave them. Arax’s older brother knew that Voski was with them and he knew that his uncle wanted him dead so instead of waiting for the gold clan to track them down, Voski took an obscure route back toward the other clan and let himself be captured by the scouts on the condition that they would look no more for his clan.
Voski was taken back to his old clan’s home, now overrun by the gold clan, and was brutalized nearly to the point of death at the hands of his own uncle Vahan. In the 500+ years since his birth, Voski had learned impeccable control of his magic and only when he was beaten nearly to death did he lose control. The chaos and fire surged out of him in fiery waves and deadly ropes of black and white lightning. Normally a Brood’s magic is in the form of a breath weapon while in dragon form, but the magic of black Brood is present in all their forms. Vahan did not know this and was the first of the gold clan to die as a result of Voski’s uncontrolled magic.
After that first burst of uncontrollable death causing magic, Voski’s body gave out completely and he went into what could only be described as a coma. It was weeks before his body healed enough for him to wake up and discover just what it was he had done. And what he had done, even though it was caused by Vahan, was unforgiveable to Voski. Not only Vahan had been a victim, but numerous others had as well and they, like Arax, had families that would now be without their loved one. The clan, now leaderless and less than half of what it had been in numbers, was in great need and considering his strength many looked to Voski to lead them.
Voski refused the pleading of the gold clan to lead them, but he did feel responsible for them and offered them help and comfort if only they could open their hearts to the rest of his and Arax’s clan. It only took a short while for the dissenters to be silenced and an overwhelming majority agreed to Voski’s terms. Hoping that he wouldn’t be betrayed, Voski went to his clan and explained everything that had happened and requested that they join what was left of the gold clan. Again there were dissenters, but it was Arax’s mate who convinced them to take the risk. After all, their clan had multiple black dragons as part of their extended family and if Voski, a lone black, could so damage the one-time-enemy gold clan then surely they would be safe from any further attack.
The union of the two clans was rocky, and periodically quite hostile. Many of the golds left for other, more conventional, clans. Even some of Voski’s clan left to find a less hostile home. But Voski stayed as did the other blacks, just to keep the peace. It is only fairly recently, with the addition of even more black Brood, that Voski has started to stray.
It was quite by accident that Voski wound up as part of a warparty of mounted dragons in the service of Darius DeLorme. He was in his dragon form, flying in the dead of night, when he came through a bank of clouds into the mid-air battle. There were rider-less dragons flying about in a panic and despite not even knowing any of them, let alone which “side” any of them were on, Voski immediately took control of the wayward dragons by speaking directly to them in the way of all dragons. He directed them back to the waiting reinforcements where they acquired new riders for the battle. When those riders were fumbling because of the lack of bonding between them and their mounts Voski again interjected his wisdom into the situation, but this time to the riders.
In short order, the flow of the battle changed in favor of the troops that Voski was helping and before long they had won the battle. Voski was happy that his help had saved the lives of both the inexperienced riders and their unbonded mounts and when one of the riders spoke into his own mind, Voski faltered in his flight ever so slightly. The man, an Alati named Tavi, requested that Voski join the service as a trainer for caretakers and new riders of his winged kin.
Having grown weary of the constant hostility at the Holding of his clan, Voski jumped at the opportunity and has been spending more and more time in the DeLorme dragon compound in the otherworld. Only rarely, in emergencies or for special family events (birthdays of Arax’s children for example) does Voski return “home”. He has never pledged himself to the Lord DeLorme, who the dragons and riders of the compound are beholden to, but that does not mean he is any less loyal in his duties. Until he is completely absolved of his responsibilities to his clan, however, he does not feel it honorable to pledge himself to Lord DeLorme.
