History
Growing up two houses down the street from his best friend made Lucas’ childhood very enjoyable. Just because his best friend happened to be a girl made no difference to Lucas. Neither did the fact that she was two years younger than him.
All through school Lucas and Archer were practically joined at the hip. If they had recess together they’d be chasing each other all over the playground. If they had lunch together, despite the rules to sit with their own class, they could always be found swapping deserts and joking around. When they could finally pick elective classes they tried to get as many together as possible. The same went for after school activities.
Starting in middle school and all through high school, if there was a play or some other drama event it was a sure bet that both Lucas and Archer would be there. Even though they could both reliably be found lurking around the stage though, it was for different reasons. Unlike Archer, whose passion was set building and other behind the scenes stuff, Lucas loved to act. It was actually his acting that had gotten Lucas a scholarship to a college six hours drive away from his hometown and his best friend.
The only thing that gave Lucas regrets about leaving his hometown was that he and Archer were slowly becoming more than just friends. All the years of sleep-overs and running wild in each others’ homes had led to a very comfortable, cuddly, physical relationship between the two of them and that mixed with their deep friendship eventually began to stir other feelings between them as well.
The first time that Lucas kissed Archer was after one of the rare times she auditioned for a part. It was Lucas’ senior year and he and Archer had both gotten parts in the fall play. When the cast list was posted and he saw her name on it he waited until he knew she had seen it too, then in addition to his customary hug for such occasions he kissed her square on the lips in from of everybody gathered by the list. By the end of the day, the whole school was joking that it was about time the two of them hooked up.
While Lucas and Archer refused to admit to having a relationship that was anything but friendly they both found themselves looking at each other differently. At New Years at a party, Lucas once again kissed Archer and this time she returned the kiss. By the time Lucas left the following fall the two of them had kissed maybe a dozen times. The night before Lucas was going to leave for college he had gotten a hold of some beer and some fruity little drinks he thought Archer would like. They wound up driving to their favorite spot, a little pull-out near the river just outside of town, parking and getting silly drunk. Before the night was over, and they passed out in Lucas’ truck bed fully clothed, Archer and Lucas gave into their curiosity, their feelings, and the alcohol; they made out.
After that initial make out session, because Lucas’ school was so far away, the others that followed were few and far between. Both Lucas’ and Archer’s parents were certain that the two would eventually form a more serious relationship and when Lucas announced he had a boyfriend a year later, and Archer announced she would be going to college on the west coast, they were all more than a little surprised. Lucas and Archer weren’t though because like they always had as kids, they had told each other everything before even telling their parents.
It was hard on both of them when Archer left for college a few weeks before her first term started but they promised to call and send emails like they had been doing. It was in one of these phone calls that Archer found out that Lucas and his boyfriend hadn’t worked out.
Lucas had just started his third year of classes, and he was missing Archer horribly, when it occurred to him that he could transfer to Archer’s college. He decided to finish out his fall term then transfer there starting in winter. Working to save money for the move, packing and getting his financial aid transferred was quite the chore but with both his and Archer’s parents encouraging him he got through it.
Archer is the only one who doesn’t know he’s coming and he just can’t wait to see her face the first time they run into each other.
