Another night. Another bar. L tapped the fingers of one against the polished wood of the bar while the other set of fingers pushed his burbon on the rocks around in its own puddle of sweat. This smokey little hole in the wall bar was just another one of his usual haunts since his return to the area. He'd been coming here for over twenty years but the owners never commented on his lack of aging but they'd stopped checking his I.D. a few years ago. L glanced around the bar and took in the spattering of regulars, the rowdy bunch of college kids out on a pub crawl and the few who seemed bent on drinking themselves to death.
There was one fellow in particular who seemed driven to induce a bout of alcohol poisoning on himself. A guy with nearly white hair was hunched over his corner table with a half d0zen bottles surrounding him. The man had been here as long as him but no one had joined. Not to mention that the guy had been well on his way to dreams of pink elephants drunk when he'd staggered in.
L acted when the man started to harrass one of the waitress. He scooted off his stool and crossed the limited floor space. "Suzanna, why don't you let me handle this guy?" he asked and, even though he hadn't been in England for decades, his voice still containted a bit of accent. Once the granddaughter of the bar's owners, bustled away from the table with her serving tray clutched to her chester, L leaned over, snagged a handful of shirt and hauled the younger man out of his seat. "Well, I see that you've had a full day already."
Being this close to the man, L could sense that he was more like him that not. Knowing that bit of information, L processed how long the man had been drinking to get like this and shoved him towards the bathroom. He'd been drunker then this before. "Now, my friend, this a friendly establishment. It may not look like much but it has quality service and acting like that will get you thrown out faster then you can move."
Once L had the man in the bathroom with the door locked, he flipped the cold knob one of the sinks fully open and, not caring about how tiny the sink was or how close the tap was to the white porcelian, shoved the guys head under the water.

He had started drinking almost as soon as he'd left the apartment he used to share with his wife. He'd been greeted at the door by a strange man holding a small child that was very obviously was Dominic's. The little girl had been babbling 'da da da da da' but she'd been looking at the stranger, not Dominic. From that moment on, things had only gotten worse.
Saiyuri had made it crystal clear to Dominic that her life no longer revolved around him, nor would their daughter's. Nerylani was growing way faster than Dominic thought would be possible and he'd hoped to have a part in her life but when he'd seen the stranger, who he later came to know was called Thiery, holding her and cuddling her like she was his own, Dominic had known that wouldn't happen.
He wasn't exactly clear on all the details of the afternoon but he knew it ended with Saiyuri asking for a divorce. Considering the guilt he'd already been feeling for running out on his wife and newborn daughter, that was the last straw. The first bar he came to had actually kicked him out before he'd had more than three drinks. From there things were all a blur.
Somehow or other, Dominic had wound up with his head under a faucet in a run down but clean bathroom. The cold water had him spluttering and hissing as he fought to be let up. As a vampire he held his liquor pretty well, getting his head shoved under cold water made the drunken haze he was in almost completely dissappear. Finally, once he'd twisted his head far enough to keep from choking on the cold water, he managed to yell at his attacker, "What the hell do you think you're doing?!"

L yanked the man backwards, letting go once the he had enough momentum to keep going backwards on his own. Unconcerned about the stranger's physical health, L twisted the knob to the right, shutting off the water flow. "Youngling Fool. We may be capable of extended life and the ability to hold liquor but that doesn't mean vampires are immune to alcohol poisoning."
L tossed a handful of paper towels from the stack sitting next to the sink at the younger vampire and leaned backwards while he cleaned up. "This is a family run establishment. Suzanna works here on the weekends so she can have a little spending money while going to college. She doesn't need drunk asses like you to give her a hard time for following the rules of the place."
Once the man had managed to soak up most of the water he'd been assulted with, L once again grabbed him by the shirt and pulled him into the main room of the bar. "Now," he said while leaning close to the youngling's ear, "you are going to go up to the bar and apologize for your behavior. You are going to say that you never meant to harrass Suzanna and then you are going to ask for a coffee before you get out this place."
L shoved the man towards the counter, reclaimed his stool and took a drink from his watered down burbon. "Well," he growled at the younger man. "What are you waiting for?"

He'd had a flat out shitty day and his night wasn't shaping up to be good one either as the stranger pulled him out from under the water with enough force that he nearly stumbled backwards when the man let go. He was about to repeat his question when the man started lecturing him about how even vampires and alcohol didn't mix well. At the word vampire, Dominic nearly ran for the door. How did this man know what he was?!
The longer the man talked, and blocked the door, the more time Dominic had to calm down and take in his surroundings including the man standign before him. Once he took the time to notice, it was obvious to Dominic that the man was also a vampire and he felt more than a little stupid. If he'd been so far gone not to noticed then he truly deserved the scolding he was getting...
Still, even though he deserved the scolding that didn't mean he enjoyed it, let alone being ordered to apologize to the poor waitress he'd yelled at... He wouldn't have done anything like that if he'd been sober and because of that he felt absolutely horrible.
When he was hauled back into the bar proper and shoved at the bar, Dominic swallowed the few shreds of pride he had left after his day and looked the waitress in the eye as he said, "My friend here tells me your name is Suzanna, is that right?" When she nodded at him he nodded back and continued, "Suzanna, I want to apologize for my actions a few minutes ago. Under normal circumstances I never would have treated you that poorly and just because I have had the worst day of my life doesn't mean I should have taken it out on you. I really am sorry." Then he swallowed the lump that had risen in his throat and said somewhat hoarsely, "If I could have a coffee I'll be on my way." With that he dug his wallet out of his pocket, took out some money slid her all the money he owed the bar for the alcohol and the coffee. Then he added a few more bills as a hefty tip for his waitress.

Another night. The same bar. L always showed up at this bar the closer it came to "The Anniversary." Things were even more difficult this year. He's seen Braeden during the day. With his arms around another man and laughing. There'd been no sign on a wedding ring. He'd cut out from the museum early and Andy, Suzanna's father, had settled him into a corner booth with a bottle of scotch.
L had his foot propped up against the table, one hand clutching the neck of the bottle and the other toying with the plate of fries the cook had brought him. They had Kristy's number if he got out of hand but he'd always been a silent drunk. He'd just taken a pull from the bottle when the front door squeaked open and the young vampire from the night before walked in. L snorted. The youngling would probably spot him and start ranting on the fairness of treatment. There were plenty more bottles surrounding him now, at seven in the evening, then had been around him closer then midnight.
Not that he cared at the moment. Andy would be the one to cut him off at closing and he'd be the one to deliver him to Kristy's doorstep. It was a annual tradition of sorts.

After the night before, Dominic wasn't sure he should show his face in the bar again but he had a strange urge to apologize to, and thank, the older vampire who had saved him from making a fool of himself. In the end, he had gotten cleaned up and headed out just before 7pm. He arrived at the bar just after seven and almost as soon as he opened the door his eyes landed on the other vampire. What he saw had him raising an eyebrow; the man was surrounded by bottles. More than he'd even had around him the night before at almost midnight...
Making sure the door closed softly behind him, Dominic made his way through the crowd over to the older vampire. He leaned against the edge of the booth opposite the vampire who was on his way to being drunk and just looked at him. Finally, when it became apparent the other man wasn't going to say anything, Dominic said what he'd come to say, "I'm sorry about last night. I also wanted to thank you for stopping me from doing something stupid." Then he improvised a bit and asked, "Who am I thanking anyway? I asked you last night but I was angry and drunk and honestly don't remember if you told me or not...." His voice trailed off and he smiled somewhat sheepishly.

L glanced at the younger vampire and sighed. The alcohol wasn't doing its job if he could still recognize the face in front of him. His mind just wasn;t numb enough yet. L took another deep pull from the bottle in front of him while the other talked. "Lysander but everyone calls me L. And you?"
L gestured for the man to sit with the hand holding the bottle. "You probably think it's unfair that I won't let you drink yourself to death in a bar and yet I'm attempting to do that very thing. I have my reasons and they start with my apparent inability to put past shit behind me but its a hell of a lot harder to do so when the person who turns you after fives years of being together leaves days after turning you."
L slid down in his seat and grumbled. Braeden had seemed happy this afternoon, arms around another man, laughing about something. There'd been no glint of gold on his ring finger or no tan line to suggest the change was recent. L had seen them, cuddling in front of one of the paintings at the museum. L scowled and looked at the man across from him. "Your welcome, by the way. Would't want to see a youngling like you waste yourself."

Dominic kept his face perfectly neutral as he listened to Lysander talk. From what he was rambling off, Dominic wasn't sure he was meaning to share. Maybe he was thinking out loud? either way, whether L meant to share or not, Dominic couldn't help but feel bad for the guy. After all, it was just yesterday that Dominic was greeted by a strange man at his wife's apartment door. The same day she'd asked for a divorce so she and Lani could get on with their lives.
Sliding into the side of the booth opposite L when he was invited, Dominic said gravely, "I'm sorry man, I've got a pretty good idea I probably know how you feel." At the objection Dominic saw Rising in the other vampire's eyes he raised his hand to stall him from saying anything. When it was clear that L was going to let Dominic talk, he said just as gravely as before, "My wife asked me for a divorce yesterday. I'm guessing so that she and the other man I saw holding my daughter could get married or something."
He may have run four months ago because he was scared but he'd said he planned on coming back when some of her family hunted him down. When he did come back Saiyuri had essentially left him. She was already with another man even! And Lani, his beautiful daughter, was calling that other man 'Dada'. While Dominic didn't say any of this out loud, the bitterness and hurt of his thoughts was clear on his face.

L twitched. In his tipsy state, he was more open to the thoughts and feelings of others. He was getting the feelings of his drinking partner in waves. L looked up at Dominic when he mentioned the divorce. "So, was she cheating on you or were you cheating on her or did the marriage just not work out?"
L leaned back against the padded back of the booth and wished for a ciggarette but he'd quit years ago. He knew what cheating felt like, but he'd been the other woman, or man rather. He'd dealt with the promises, the gifts, the hiding. L banged his head back against the padding and blindly reached for his bottle of booze. Once he had a grip on the neck of the bottle, L tipped it back and slammed half the contents down in one go. He hissed at the burn as he set the bottle down. "You probably think it's unfair that I can let myself get piss drunk but I won't let you. I'm older, my lad, and if I don't manage to get drunk, I have no clue what I'll do but it won't be pretty."
"The last time I was sober this time of year, I nearly managed to kill myself." Gods above but that hadn't been easy. It had taken him hours to hunt down a hunter low enough to help a vampire kill himself. The wound on his neck had bled nearly dry but Kristy had found him then, cleaned him up and got him back to the states. He still carried the scar on that night on his neck. A neat necklace of scartissue that transected the front of his neck.
"So, why'd she leave you?"

He couldn't help but flinch at the obvious pain in L's voice and when he was asked why Saiyuri left him, Dominic answered, "I've been gone for four months and apparently while I was away she found another man she loves better than me. If the bastard hadn't opened the door holding my daughter I might have thought she was joking but she flaunted him in front of me. Not only that, my own daughter was calling the other man 'Dada'. She had to have been taught that by her mother..." He shuddered and raised his hand to catch a waitress's attention.
When one finally came over he ordered another round for L and a round for himself as well. With L this far gone, maybe he'd be able to get himself piss-ass drunk himself and he'd be able to wallow in his misery like he never quite got the chance to the night before. Maybe. Oh he needed something, his own mother said she didn't blame Saiyuri for doing what she did. He'd found that out today and it was another reason for him coming back to the bar. His own mother was against him...

L could feel a good growl growing in his throat but it died away when Andy set another bottle down in front of him. The waitress who'd taken the order could be seen, edging Dominic's drink closer to him before scuttling away. Most in the bar left it to Andy to keep L supplied in liquid on days like this.
L eyed the vampire across from him. Something about the man's story just made him want to reach out and shake him. "Well, why were you gone for four months? Business trip? And how did you know that your former wife taught the kid to say anything? Maybe she just got tired of waiting for you to turn up and isn't da da da one of the first things children manage to say?"
While he waited for Dominic's answer, L slouched lower in the booth's seat, taking his bottle with him. A quick glance at his watch confirned that he still had a few hours before Andy would cut him back to half a bottle an hour.

Dominic wasn't anywhere near drunk enough to not recognize the edge of anger in Lysander's voice as he asked his questions regarding Dominic's absense from his wife and child. Still, he couldn't keep from telling the man the truth even though it would likely bite him in the ass later.
Taking a long draw on the drink the waitress brought him, Dominic thought about just how to say what he needed to say. After a few moments and another long swig, Dominic finally answered, "Things got complicated when Saiyuri got pregnant. Those complications we could deal with easily though. So what if she was stuck with wings, a tail and spots for 6 months." He finished off his drink in one long gulp then gestured for another.
He couldn't believe he was telling a man who was essentially a stranger all of this but at least he wouldn't have to see the man again if he wound up hating him for what he'd done. Before his new drink showed up Dominic continued. He cleared his throat once then said, "It was only after she gave birth, once I held our daughter in my arms, that things got bad enough to make me run." He flinched at his own words but kept on before he lost his nerve, "Saiyuri essentially went into a coma, one brought on by the warring Custos and angel sides of her heritage, and the doctor told me she might not wake up. That wouldn't have made me run except for the day I had already had with her families. I honestly wouldn't have left her, or Lani, for anything short of sheer terror of her family. Her mother's side is full of various siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, neice and nephews. Her father's side is mostly her siblings but then there's her whole Pard too. Alone, the two sides aren't horrible but together..." he gave a visable shudder and took another draw on his drink. "Thank you," he said to the waitress before going back to tellng L just how horrible he was...
"They are overwhelming and invasive and just plain intimidating. Well intentioned yes but the road to hell is paved with good intentions as they say... and her family is my own personal hell." Realizing he was rambling off on a tangent, he shook his head and got back on topic. "Sorry, umm... Anyway, two of her aunts on her mother's side hunted me down in a bar, threatened me and were about to kill me i think but I swore I would come back just that it might take me a while. I'm not sure why they actually decided to leave, gods know I was a pathetic whimpering mess by the time they did though..."
His throat was getting dry from talking and it was getting choked up with emotion so Dominic gave in and fnished off his second drink. He knew he shouldn't be drinking them this fast but he couldn't help it. As much as he wanted to push the day before to the back of his mind, talking about it made it more real and just as hard to deal with it as it had been the day before.
After he'd set his empty drink down, Dominic finally turned his eyes up from the table to L and finished spilling his pathetic tale of his cowardice. "Anyway, that was four months ago. I took the time away to help my family deal with some financial matters, the book keeper for my uncle's Inn had stolen some money from him, and to get my head on straight. I'd finally come to terms with how stupid i was and so I went back to her yesterday. When the man answered the door holding a girl that could only be mine, though she looked two years old thanks to her mixed heritage, i knew i'd fucked up even worse than I thought before. When Saiyuri asked me for a divorce because she loved the man holding my daughter.... God it was awful..."
When he finally finished talking, Dominic had come to the conclusion that what he was drinking was not nearly strong enough, or he hadn't gotten nearly enough of it in his system yet so he ordered a couple more drinks. As he waited for his drinks he waited for L's response as well. He was preparing to be flayed as that was the look he was being given.

Andy shook his head and wished the young man the best of luck. He'd taken to hovering near L on these nights and had heard the whole story. Andy glanced to the left, watching as the hand L had around the neck of his bottle tightened till his knuckles turned white. He could see the growling. In some ways, the poor fellow's sitation mirror that of L's. Andy removed the white cloth he'd stuffed between belt and jeans and procedded to wipe down the bar as an excuse to stay near L, in case he needed to pry the older man off the younger one.
***
L growled as bits of Dominic's story filtered into his mind. So likes his sad little tale that he couldn't help jumping to defend the man's former wife. "So you left her alone at one of lifes most important times and procedded to leave her alone for four months? What sort of idiot are you?"
L sat up in his seat and, using his bottle for leverage, pulled his body into a standing position, leaning over until his nose was centimeters from Dominic's. "Men like you are the very scum of the earth. You have no other thought then your own fears, desires, and needs. You are seemingly incapable to sticking around when a person needs you the most," he said with a growl still rumbling in his throat.
When Andy moved to pull him away from Dominic, L waved him off and slouched back down in his seat. "You deserve what you get and you deserve to get some much more. I hope your daughter never knows you."

Despite the hold he thought he had on his temper and his emotions, Dominic barely managed to keep himself from jumping across the table after L and attempting to kill him. He knew he would loose, Lysander was older than him and more powerful and Dominic just wasn't quite -that- stupid.
As it was, Dominic had an answering growl for Lysander as he glared at the man across the table, "Only a cold heartless bastard would wish that on anybody! I said I'd go back and I did. I didn't jump into bed with the first pretty girl to cross my path once i left her. Its not like I was cheating on her. I just needed to get my wits about me so I didn't do anything stupid and leave her for good! I love them both so much I just wanted to figure things out so I could be a good father and a better husband..."
His statement had been quite heated and the anger had surged through him in the form of fire. The smell of smoldering fabric alerted Dominic to the fact that his jeans, which his hands were fisted in, were charring. "Oh fuck!" he said as he scrambled out of the booth at the first flicker of flame, reacting like a human (swatting at the fire to put it out) rather than as the vampire of the Keahi line that he was.
Fire was the Keahi line's innate element to call and control but when Dominic got alcohol in him or his emotions got out of control he still occaisonally had issues with it... With five years under his belt as a vampire he was still essentially a child in his powers, those born as vampires got their powers much earlier in life and by the time they were his age would have much better control.
As soon as the flickers of flames were out, Dominic glared and growled at Lysander one more time for good measure then made his way grumpily to the bathroom. Once he was inside, and certain he was alone, Dominic turned on the faucet and gave himself a dunking in cold water rather similar to the one that L had given him the night before. Once he was sure his temper and his body temperature were under control, Dominic pulled himself out from under the cold water and stared at himself in the mirror. Lysander was partially right, he knew... Dominic did deserve mostly whatever he got. The only part he disagreed on was that he couldn't imagine his life without his daughter. The past four months had been torture...

L propped his foot up on the edge of the bench seat, knee pressed into the table. He stared at the door to the men's room, waiting for it to swing back open. Oh, he'd tell that youngling a thing or two when he reappeared. He and Andy had an unspoken rule about this nights. L wouldn't move from the bench for no reason and he could drink as much as he wanted. When the youngling reappeared at the table, L motioned him to sit down, hooking his free foot behind the younger man's knee to help him along. "I want you to answer this question honestly. When you were turned, if you were turned, was it a spur of the moment thing or was it from a person you'd spent years with and that person had turned you to you by their side for all time?" When Dominic gave a negative shake of his head, L rested his head back and chuckled. "I thought as much. I'm going to tell you a story and you are going to listen very well.
"I'm 63 years old, turned before you were even a thought bubble in your mother's head. I was turned by a man, my married lover. That idea may make you queasy but it's true. He left me days after turning me all because I wanted him to divorce his wife and be with me but he cared way to much for his social standing. Now, imagine how I felt, newly turned and I barely had a grasp on the basics. I loved this man and thought he loved me, the whole till death did us part and beyond sort of love. I did the first thing that came to mind. Believing that life was to horrible to live. I went out and found myself the lowest hunter known to mankind...he was very willing to help me off myself," L unbuttoned the top few buttons of his shirt and showed off the ropy, raised scar at the base of his neck. "Never cleanly healed. Now, I want you to imagine your wife.
"I want you to imagine her waking up after being comatose to find you gone. What do you think her inital reaction would be, even if there'd been reassurance that you'd come back. I can tell you how she would feel. Depressed, unable to understand why this man who claimed to love her so much had just run off after their daughter was born. Right after she'd been born." L raised his bottle and slurped down more while watching Dominic.

Dominic had taken a few moments to calm down before heading back out to the bar proper. Once he was out there he walked straight back over to the table that Lysander was sitting at and waited until he was allowed to sit back down. Why on earth he had gone back out for more punishment, Dominic didn't know but he could see it brewing in L's eyes.
He sat down, deadly calm, and just waited. He sat and listened as L went off on him, and about his past. He couldn't blame the guy for being bitter so when L was finally finished Dominic didn't get mad back. Instead all he asked was, "Don't you think I've done that a million times already?"
Somebody had refilled his drink while he was in the bathroom and he drank it down then continued softly, "Also there are some key differences between myself and Braeden. First, I didn't leave her for somebody else and second, I -did- go back even if it took me four months. I'm still madly in love with my wife Lysander even if I acted stupidly. I can't go back in time and fix it so I had just hoped to pick up where we left off. That was probably stupid too but It was wishful thinking. Instead I found she had a new man in her life that she wants to marry. There's nothing I can do about that either except pity myself for being a fool. If you feel that you, the man who sits here showing me a nasty scar, virtually self-inflicted, and drinking himself stupid, can judge me for having a one man pity party go for it. I don't care. She hates me, I hate me, what difference does it make to me if you hate me?" Now he reached across the table, snagged up one of L's drinks and downed it. He hissed at the burn, revelled in the potency and raised his hand and the empty to indicate they needed more.

L signeled Andy and the man depoisted another round of bottles on the table. "I've been a one man pity party for last 40 years. Besides, your ex is stronger woman then then man that I am. She didn't linger around waiting for you to come back and make everything right."
L motioned to the layer of bottles on the table. "You think I'm drinking like this because just because I can. I saw my sire today, wrapped in up in the arms of another man and flaunting their relationship. I knew nothing when he turned and then left me. He got off on having me fed off of him." L hissed as he screwed the top off a bottle. "Our situations are comparable, I'll give you that. But that doesn't mean that you're the poor husband. You left."
L hissed again, drawing the bottle closer to his chest. "And don't worry, I like you. You're cute, in the way a lost puppy is cute. I just want to give you a warm home and fed you but that doesn't mean that I don't think you should be horse whipped for leaving your wife and newborn child." L leered across the table at the younger vampire. He'd been serious about the cute comment, Dominic was a good looking man though he seemed completely straight. Damn.

Dominic wanted to point out, once again, that while he -had- left Saiyuri he had gone back. At this point though, he didn't really want to get into an argument with the older man so he just sat and listened, waiting to get scolded some more for being awful. Instead he was compared to a lost puppy. L called him cute like a lost puppy. A lost puppy?!
After being called cute like a lost puppy, L proceeded to scold Dominic just as he'd expected would happen in the first place and the change of subjects, while expected, totally threw him. When the man was done talking, Dominic just stared at him totally and utterly confused. How was he supposed to react? What was he supposed to say?
Against his will, Dominic felt heat rising up his neck and onto his cheeks. Hoping that L wouldn't notice, he grabbed up one of the multiple bottles on the table and sucked it down. He needed a distraction. A man had called him cute and then told him he deserved to be horsewhipped. What the hell?!?!

L grinned when he saw Dominic's skin flare a red color. In some way or another he had some effect on the younger vampire. "So, Dominic, how do you feel about getting pissed with an older man?"
***
L groaned as that first blast of sunlight hit his eyes. He tried to roll away from the light but was stopped by a warm body. Muttering, L propped himself up on his elbows and peered to his right. The young vampire from last night was curled up on the other side of his bed. L lifted the sheet around his waist and grumbled. Apparently nothing had happened after they'd wobbled out of the bar with Andy's assistance. L grumbled and prodded at Dominic's bare shoulder. He wanted that side of the bed as it was away from the ten o'clock sunrays. "Wake up, Puppy, or I'm shoving you off the bed."

He had been sound asleep when his shoulder was poked and he reluctantly felt himself starting to wake up. It took the sound of somebody's voice to bring him the rest of the way awake and what he heard was very confusing. Why was a man talking to him? Did he and Saiyuri have company?
Rolling over on the bed, he squinted up at the figure that had the sun glaring in behind them. Now he was really confused... The window in the bedroom he shared with his wife was at the foot of the bed, not the side.... And the figure most certainly wasn't Saiyuri he realized as he blinked a few times to clear his vision. "What the hell?" he asked a bit frantically as he realized who the figure was.
